Garfield Stainless Steel Cornice.jpg
TCS stainless steel roof and cornice installed on the James Garfield Historic site in Mentor Ohio.
Terne coated stainless steel roof cornice. Custom fabricated in the shop and installed, the seams are folded and locked together, then soldered with 50/50 tin/lead solder.
Terne (alternatively terneplate) is an alloy of lead with about 15% tin. This is the minimum tin content required to obtain an adherent coating on hot-dipped iron sheet.
Terne is used to coat sheet steel to inhibit corrosion. It is the one of the cheapest alloys suitable for this, and the tin content is kept at a minimum for precisely this purpose, to minimise the cost
